Bikes4ERP: Improving access to education through sustainable community support

Written by Chené Ferreira | 15 April 2026

Bikes4ERP, one of the projects of our non-profit organisation Elephants, Rhinos &People (ERP), focuses on improving access to education in rural South African communities by providing bicycles to schoolchildren who travel long distances every day. This results in safer journeys, reduced travel time, improved school attendance and punctuality, and overall benefits to the community in the long term.

SUMMARY: EPI-USE Labs is a member of Group Elephant, which owns and funds the non-profit organisation Elephants, Rhinos & People (ERP).  Bikes4ERP is an ERP community initiative focused on improving access to education in rural South African communities, by providing bicycles to schoolchildren who travel long distances every day. This programme results in safer journeys, reduced travel time, improved school attendance and punctuality, and overall benefits to the community in the long term.

At EPI-USE Labs, our purpose extends beyond technology. As a member of Group Elephant, which owns and funds the non-profit organisation Elephants, Rhinos & People (ERP), we actively support initiatives that focus on community upliftment, access to education, and sustainable development.

One of the ERP projects that we support is Bikes4ERP, a community initiative focused on improving access to education in rural communities by providing bicycles to schoolchildren who travel long distances every day.

What is Bikes4ERP?

Bikes4ERP is an annual bicycle distribution initiative designed to reduce barriers to education. Many children in rural areas face daily challenges such as:

  • Long walking distances to school
  • Unsafe travel conditions
  • Fatigue that affects classroom performance
  • Limited access to reliable transportation

By providing bicycles to learners in need, Bikes4ERP helps alleviate these challenges, improving school attendance, punctuality, and overall educational outcomes.

Improving school attendance through bicycle donations

In 2025, Bikes4ERP marked another successful year of impact. Building on previous bike drops, ERP staff, volunteers, and supporters came together to build bicycles from scratch and distribute them to children in surrounding communities.

The results are immediate and measurable:

  • Safer journeys to school
  • Reduced travel time
  • Improved attendance and punctuality
  • Increased access to quality education

Access to education is one of the most effective ways to break cycles of poverty and create long-term community resilience. A simple bicycle becomes a powerful tool for social mobility and opportunity.

Sustainable community development, year after year

What makes Bikes4ERP special is its consistency. Rather than a once-off intervention, it is a long-term community development initiative that continues to deliver sustainable impact. Each annual bike-build strengthens community engagement, volunteer participation, youth empowerment, and local development near conservation areas.

By improving educational access in rural communities, Bikes4ERP supports ERP’s broader mission of aligning conservation efforts with community upliftment. Thriving communities play a critical role in sustainable environmental stewardship.
