Data masking in non-production SAP environments.

Executive Summary

With more government and industry controls being placed on organisations, there is a greater propensity to breach data security regulations without knowing the consequences. The use of SAP production data in non-production environments is crucial for making ‘real’ business tests and use case decisions. As a result of this, breaches in Test and Quality Assurance environments can cost millions to rectify, and cause irreparable damage to brand reputation and even imprisonment.

Did you know that it will no longer be legal to have live production data in non-production environments? Upcoming European Union data protection laws will require individual customer consent should an organisation need to use customer data in non-production environments. The impact and costs of such regulations are significant and Data Protection Authorities across Europe are ready to enforce compliance.

This White Paper describes the context of data masking and its relevance and details the consequences of using production data in SAP non-production and test environments.

A summarised version of the Data Protection Act across nine European countries can be found in the appendix section of this paper.
