Babcock & Wilcox chooses the power of EPI-USE Labs to transform their landscape
As part of a company restructuring, Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) decided to re-align their SAP landscape. The scope of the project included the full divestment of five company codes and three related plants, including all relevant master and transactional data.
In the course of 12 weeks, EPI-USE Labs, Babcock & Wilcox and the third-party provider managed to successfully extract the relevant business data and create a new SAP landscape that integrated with the necessary non-SAP systems.
The situation
As part of a company restructuring occurring in June 2015, B&W made the decision to re-align their SAP landscape and deployment to conform to the restructure. The next step was to clarify how EPI-USE Labs could assist with the project.
We had a very fruitful workshop going through the enterprise setup in SAP, agreeing on the scope and framework…. EPI-USE Labs took us by the hand and guided us to the right decision: when to slice data, and when not to.

The challenge
After considering multiple bids, B&W chose EPI-USE Labs for the restructuring project centering on SAP’s ECC system. The decision was made after a two-week, detailed Blueprinting workshop held in mid-November 2015 involving B&W’s technical and functional teams, as well as a third-party provider.
The blueprint gave B&W’s management the confidence and information needed to understand in detail how the restructuring would be executed. It included a high-level schedule, landscape architecture, functional data analysis and a formal Statement of Work (SOW) defining deliverables, roles and responsibilities.
The decision to move ahead came at the end of November 2015, when the EPI-USE Labs team working alongside B&W’s Basis team began to install and configure their solutions, to build the required validation systems.
In addition, B&W also made a decision to externally host the new SAP ECC system using a Tier 1 third-party service provider.
The scope of the project included the full divestment of five company codes and three related plants, including all relevant master and transactional data.
We had two validation runs prior to the final carve-out. As these had gone smoothly, we were all very comfortable prior to the final carve-out and we were able to give a final okay in the final cut over weekend, 6 hours before schedule.

EPI-USE Labs demonstrated a deep knowledge of SAP and its complexities, as well as flexibility when dates shifted.

The result
In the course of 12 weeks (including Christmas and New Year’s day), EPI-USE Labs, Babcock & Wilcox and the third-party provider managed to successfully extract the relevant business data and create a new SAP landscape that integrated with the necessary non-SAP systems.
As part of the plan, two validation cycles were included, with both technical and functional validation being done to ensure a smooth cutover process.
Despite pressure from parallel projects, the project was successfully completed on time and within budget, thanks to close collaboration between the teams and their members and the flexibility of EPI-USE Labs.
B&W is now using its new landscape productively and was able to complete the transition of its SAP landscape earlier than scheduled.
We would highly recommend EPI-USE Labs, and plan to use them for any subsequent work.
