About Borealis AG

Borealis AG is an Austrian chemical company, headquartered in Vienna since 2006. It is the world’s eighth-largest producer of polyethylene and polypropylene. Borealis was formed in 1994 through the merger of Statoil and Neste. The Latin word ‘borealis’ means ‘from the north’ and reflects the company’s early ties with the Nordic region. Their first head office was in Copenhagen. Over the years, Borealis has developed from its early Nordic roots to an international company with a strong presence in Central Europe and the Middle East.

What stood out from working with EPI-USE Labs was their people. Their experts know what they are doing, and what they are talking about, so they know quite early what questions to ask. That limits the surprises you get later in the project.

Carving out Company Codes in stages

In preparation for divesting one of their business units, Borealis wanted to create a completely separate and independent IT landscape centred around their existing SAP systems, but with only the data of the Company Codes related to the business due to be sold off. The SAP landscape consisted of several systems, both cloud and on-premise, including SuccessFactors and Ariba and ECC, BW and GTS. Eviden defined the relevant carve-out approaches for each system; Eviden and EPI-USE Labs created a solution for the carve-out of ECC, BW and GTS using Data Sync Manager™ for Landscape Transformation (DSM LT).

An additional challenge was posed by Borealis, who did not want the carve-out done directly from their Production system, to limit the risk of interruption to their 24/7 operations. Therefore, they opted to use a staging system for the go-live, rather than conducting the carve-out activities straight from the Production system. The staging system presented extra challenges for the project; for example, ensuring the right transport order was in place, and having an up-to-date list of users when refreshing the staging system.

Data Sync Manager (DSM) LT facilitates smooth company carve-out

EPI-USE Labs used System Landscape Optimisation (SLO) expertise and software to perform the company carve-out. This included using a staging system to extract the scoped data; the staging system had to be prepared before the data could be extracted. DSM LT was used to extract the shell from Borealis’ Production System to create the Nitro Production for all three systems (ECC, BW and GTS). EPI-USE Labs then extracted data from each system according to the Company Codes in scope for the carve-out, and also extracted the remaining data objects for HR and FICO data.

We had a lot of last-minute changes in BW, and together with EPI-USE Labs we worked through them to define the best option. We always felt very supported by the EPI-USE Labs’ team; it was really a very good collaboration.

Understanding the Business Warehouse (BW) requirement

Using DSM LT, the consultants were able to perform the company code carve-out directly within the BW landscape, thus avoiding manual reloads after Go-live. This guaranteed that the operational reporting between ECC and BW was consistent immediately.

During the project, the team performed a data analysis. Combined with DSM LT, this allowed for a fine-tuned slicing of all InfoProvider data, filtered by InfoProvider. In most cases, the selection was made using the Company Code, as well as plant and sales organisation, or even custom characteristics. This resulted in an accurate and optimised extraction, while guaranteeing the security of Borealis’ business data.

If the data reload was possible in certain cases, the technical constraints and the complexity of the architecture didn’t leave a choice in the approach; it was important to consider all the system sources, especially the slicing and extraction of the historical data stored in non-ABAP SAP Near Line Storage archiving systems.

Successful company carve-out for three systems: ECC, BW and GTS

Borealis was able to carve out the data for Nitro Company Codes for three systems: BW, ECC and GTS. Although there were delays, EPI-USE Labs adopted a flexible approach and completed the project successfully. EPI-USE Labs’ in-depth knowledge and experience of SAP meant they were able to carve out only the required data, managing data risks and ensuring Borealis’ business data was handled securely. The strong partnership between Eviden and EPI-USE Labs was pivotal in the project success.

When you do manual carve-outs, there’s always this high level of uncertainty and risk. The predictability and repeatability of the EPI-USE Labs’ software-based approach is impressive. It not only saves time and improves efficiency, but gives you fewer errors.
